Landman Season 2 Episode 6 Officially Sets Up Tommy’s M-Tex Exit

Landman Season 2, Episode 6, just gave Tommy Norris (Billy Bob Thornton) a reason to leave M-Tex and has cleared a path for him to get out safely while he still can. In “Dark Night of the Soul,” tension starts to rise between Tommy and Cami (Demi Moore), with Monty’s (Jon Hamm) landman and wife running M-Tex after his death.

Tommy and Cami’s transition to power has faced a rocky start, with M-Tex’s new leaders discovering that all the company’s money is tied up in insurance investments. The development prompts Cami to seek a loan from Danny Morrell (Andy Garcia), and the new partnership reveals a formative issue between the companies’ chief operators in “Dark Night of the Soul.”

Landman Season 2, Episode 6, spells out the formative experience underlying Tommy and Cami’s relationship, creating an urgent problem. After Tommy and Cami negotiate with Morrell (aka cartel boss Gallino) at the rodeo, Danny tells Tommy later that evening at the Cattleman’s club that he gets the sense Miller doesn’t trust him, prompting Norris to reveal previously unknown details.

Tommy tells the central Landman Season 2 character that he and Monty went into the oil business together, and, at one point, he had a version of what the Millers have. However, Tommy confides in Danny that the financial crash of 2008 cleared him out because he didn’t hedge his money like Monty, and that’s why Cami doesn’t trust him.

Tommy speculates that Cami is worried he will run her company into the ground and lose her fortune, explaining why Miller undercuts him in the negotiations at the rodeo while securing funding from Morrell’s Sonrisa Oil Company. Cami accepts Danny’s offer before Tommy is finished negotiating, and Tommy Norris’s backstory adds new weight to the emerging power struggle.

Therefore, Landman all but confirms that Cami doesn’t trust the new leader of M-Tex. Gallino explains how Miller’s distrust creates an urgent problem in Landman Season 2, saying that oil sharks will start circling if they sense that the company’s owner is second-guessing its president. Tommy Norris Could Leave M-Tex Oil With Cooper

One option for getting Tommy out of hot water is to reverse Miller’s feelings toward him, creating a more positive impression and a united front for M-Tex. However, there’s a real possibility that Norris has permanently lost Cami’s trust, and that M-Tex replacing Tommy Norris in Landman Season 2 and finding a new president is only a matter of time.

That said, Landman Season 2, Episode 6, officially presents a reason for Tommy to jump ship while he still has access to a fresh start. Tommy’s son, Cooper Norris (Jacob Lofland), starts his own drilling operation in Season 2, and it could be Tommy and Cooper’s ticket out of their current situation and comfortably into the big leagues.

Cooper saw a production gap in Landman Season 1 and planned to drill at Wolf Camp. Norris Jr. was wildly successful in his oil drilling. However, Cooper failed to secure financing properly. Though Norris Jr. made a deal with Sonrisa, he ultimately billed his debt to M-Tex. Tommy has proposed that Cami’s company assume Cooper’s operation, but there’s another solution.

The premiere of Landman Season 2 revealed that Cooper’s wells could make him as much as $10 million a year while splitting his income with Danny Morrell’s company. While Tommy proposed that M-Tex could assume the operation, another option would be for Tommy and Cooper to go into business together, operating the wells together while maintaining Sonrisa’s financing deal.

Going into business would allow Tommy to step back from the tumultuous landscape that awaits him as M-Tex’s president, indelibly changed by Monty Miller’s death in the finale of Landman Season 1. It would leave Cami to run her business however she wants, ending their power struggle and creating a career for Tommy that has a bit more freedom.

Did Tommy Norris And Gallino Just Become Allies In Landman Season 2?

One of the most fascinating elements of Landman Season 2, Episode 6, is the quiet shift in Tommy and Gallino’s professional relationship, with Norris opening up to Danny at the end. After Tommy officially partners with Morrell when Cami accepts his financing offer, there’s a new sense of trust between the central Landman Season 2 characters.

Tommy’s trust is evident in the way he opens up to Gallino at Cattleman’s, divulging personal information. It contrasts the way that Tommy has dismissed Danny in the past, and prompts questions about whether their relationship can improve and where it’s heading. Morrell even explains the element of their history that jeopardizes the Norris family tree most.

Danny assures Tommy at Cattleman’s that his two businesses never cross. When Tommy recalls the event in the finale of Landman Season 1 that contradicts him, Gallino explains that he stepped in to kill Jimenez (Alex Meraz) because he crossed the line between drugs and oil. He intervened for that reason and to save Tommy.

Gallino’s alleged desire to keep his business with the cartel separate from the oil industry echoes the sentiment the crime boss expressed in Landman Season 1 and seemingly confirms that he and Tommy have the same interests. The shift opens the door to allyship, which Tommy would need to leave M-Tex behind and forge a new, Yellowstone-like family legacy.

Tommy has been hesitant to work with the crime boss. However, Norris has had to tolerate the cartel for years as M-Tex’s landman and fixer. Plus, he’s already in cahoots with Gallino due to Cami Miller’s dealings. Therefore, Tommy’s hands are tied, but he has a window to act on a future that exists outside Monty’s shadow.
