Why Everyone Thinks This ‘Yellowstone’ Spinoff Is the Best One Yet

Paramount
Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler didn’t ride back into our lives for a peaceful little ranching series—and thank goodness for that!
Dutton Ranch arrived on May 15 and fans didn’t need much convincing to dive in head-first. The new series follows Beth and Rip after the Yellowstone finale, with Carter still part of their little family and a new life waiting in South Texas. A person might hear “new life” and picture rest, healing, and maybe a porch with a nice breeze, but this is Beth and Rip we’re talking about. They can leave Montana, but they were never going to leave trouble far behind!
That built-in history gives Dutton Ranch a very different feeling from some of the other Yellowstone spinoffs. Marshals has Kayce Dutton, and that alone gives it a major connection to the original show, but his story has moved into cases, investigations, and U.S. Marshal business. The Madison has Michelle Pfeiffer leading a new chapter, which is exciting in its own way, but it also means viewers are meeting a mostly new cast. With Dutton Ranch, fans aren’t waiting to figure out who to care about or why. The answer is already right there in the doorway—and probably glaring at someone, if we’re being honest.
While Beth and Rip bring the history of Yellowstone with them, this new show isn’t simply dragging them through the same old fights under a Texas sun. Their marriage, Carter’s place in their lives, the shadow of the Dutton name, and all that leftover family drama are already part of the story before the first argument even starts. Beth is still sharp enough to make a grown man rethink his whole morning and Rip is still the person who can make a room go still without wasting a word. Carter is older now, too, which gives the show another emotional thread as this strange little family tries to figure out what life after Yellowstone actually looks like.
And clearly, a lot of people wanted to see that! Paramount says the premiere drew 12.9 million global viewers on Paramount+ in its first week, making it the streamer’s biggest original series debut ever. It also brought in 2.9 million viewers on Paramount Network the night it premiered.
That makes sense, because Yellowstone left Beth and Rip in a place that felt happy, but not exactly finished. They finally had a life that was theirs, away from the ranch and all the fighting that came with it, but there was always something funny about imagining those two settling into peace and quiet for good. Dutton Ranch picks up in that more interesting space, where Beth and Rip got what they wanted and now have to figure out what it actually looks like to live with it.
One thing is for sure: We’re all along for the ride!
