Billy Bob Thornton Drops a Promising Update on Landman Season 2

Following a first season that truly got the rigs firing, Billy Bob Thornton is already getting back to work on Landman, with Season 2 of the Paramount+ series now fully underway in West Texas. The show, from the pen of the most prolific man in Hollywood — Taylor Sheridan, perhaps you’ve heard of him? — ranked among the top 10 original streaming series during the fourth quarter of 2024, and was the biggest premiere for the streamer in two years, continuing to carry that momentum through January’s finale. Thornton, speaking at an Emmy FYC event for the show on Sunday told The Hollywood Reporter of his pride at the show’s success.

“We knew it was going to be successful — we didn’t know it was going to be this successful. It’s amazing, we’re so proud, we love the people we work with and so we’re proud for everybody involved.”

The show, which is set within the — quite literally — explosive world of the Texas oil industry, was swiftly renewed for a second season and started filming in April, with Thornton adding they should finish by August. Regarding his thoughts on the season two script, Thornton lavished praise on Sheridan’s work, saying:

“I loved it. Taylor knows this show very well, he’s got a vision for it so it’s pretty easy. I didn’t expect to read it and go, ‘Wait a minute, hang on here.’ It was great.”

Who Else Is Joining ‘Landman’ Season 2?

Also returning is Andy Garcia, whose character delivered a surprise jolt to the season one finale. “He’ll be more of a part of it this year for sure,” Thornton confirmed. “Andy and I go way back too, first time working together though.”

Garcia, when asked what fans can expect from his storyline, was keeping it light and cryptic: “I’ll be there,” he said with a grin, adding only that the new scripts are “Beautiful, just beautiful. The writing is always so strong.”

Another new addition is Sam Elliott, who comes on board as a series regular. “It’s been awesome,” Thornton said of working with the legendary Western icon. “I’ve known Sam since the ’80s so he and I go way back.” No details have been revealed about Elliott’s character yet, but let’s be honest — few things say “Texas oil baron with a shady past” more than Sam Elliott’s mustache.

Landman Season 2 is currently in production. Season 1 is streaming on Paramount+. Stay tuned for more updates on Taylor Sheridan’s crime-verse.
