We finally have an answer to one of the biggest questions surrounding Dutton Ranch!

On Friday, May 15, the highly anticipated Yellowstone spinoff premiered with two episodes, detailing Beth and Rip’s journey to the fictional town of Rio Paloma in South Texas. While many fans never envisioned the Montana natives uprooting their lives in the mountains for the endless skies of Texas, the first 10 minutes of the premiere gave at least a smidge of insight into why the couple chose to leave Big Sky Country.

The Dutton Ranch premiere opened with Beth and Rip horseback riding across open pastures with the familiar Montana mountains in the backdrop. Knowing that the show was to take place in South Texas, the scene may have confused viewers, as it looked much like the Yellowstone landscapes we’ve all come to know and love—but then everything started to shift into perspective. As Beth was napping under a tree beneath the Montana night sky, Rip had grown restless at the scent and sight of fire. When he got up to survey the area, he noticed that a wildfire was spreading rapidly toward their property. At the realization, he alerted Beth and the pair galloped back toward home before parting ways—Beth to gather Carter, their horses, and their most prized possessions, and Rip to race through the flames to cut the fences and release the cattle.

Many fans would agree: It was a heart-pounding, tear-jerking start to the most highly anticipated series debut in recent memory. As action-packed as the intro was, it only provides insight into why Beth, Rip, and Carter had to move—not why they chose to leave Montana altogether. Could the proximity of the Four Sixes to Rio Paloma—or the people he met there—have something to do with it? Time will tell!
