‘Landman’ Season 2 Drops Major Twist That Could Break Billy Bob Thornton’s Character

Taylor Sheridan’s Landman season 2, set to premiere on November 16, 2025, might just deliver the biggest punch yet, and no, it’s not from cartels or courtroom drama. Well, the upcoming season can come from Tommy Norris’ (Billy Bob Thornton) own son.

In season 1, Tommy took over M-Tex oil following Monty’s presumed death and fought off enemies left and right. However, his toughest fight might be at home with his son, Cooper (Jacob Lofland).

Well, Cooper is no longer a kid who idolized his dad; rather, he now sees Tommy for who he really is- hardened, tough, and morally gray. This shift can finally set up the stage for a father-son showdown that might be a downfall of their bond and maybe even break Tommy’s carefully built façade. And if this happens, the emotional clash between the two could hit harder than any shootout or accident we’ve seen.

Landman Co-creator Teased Tommy-Cooper Changed Dynamics In Season 2

Landman season 2 is all set to shake things up in a blasting way. We’re aware that Tommy will be stepping into the CEO chair at M-Tex Oil following Monty’s death. Meanwhile, Cooper is carving out his own oil empire. This major twist will alone set the stage for a father-son dynamic that is promised to get messy.

Well, the thing about Tommy is: He likes the guys. He likes being involved in the day-to-day operations, at least to an extent. There are some days that I think he wishes he could never look at another pumpjack again. But it’s also part of what’s in his blood and what drives him to get up every day.

Sure, the new role will definitely force Tommy into dinner tables and boardrooms, but will he ever fully ditch the roughneck side of him? To this Wallace shared,

Tommy is never going to get the landman out of him. I mean, that’s who he is. He does not want to be an executive guy. I don’t think he wants to be in the suit, but I believe he’ll do whatever it takes.

On the other side, Cooper’s storyline will dig deeper into his independence. Sure, his relationship with Ariana is built on real love, but that has its own struggles. According to Wallace, Cooper’s path to slowly build his own oil business can eventually put him into a collision with his father. Wallace shared,

There’s obviously a deep love and a deep connection there, for how short of a time these two have known each other. Whether or not they can last, whether or not they can grow beyond those circumstances is still to be seen.

Now, with Tommy juggling corporate politics and Cooper yet to prove himself on the ground, Landman season 2 is surely lining up a father-son face-off that will be far greater than the disaster from season 1.

How Will Landman Season 1 Finale Set Up Season 2 Story?

Turns out, Landman’s season 1 finale wasn’t just wrapping things up; it was actually setting up the landmines for bigger storms ahead. In season 2, we will see how Tommy manages his transition from boots to boardroom. The guy who literally thrived in the dirt and chaos of the oil fields will now be navigating power suits, politics, and boardroom battles. This shift is all the spark we need.

Meanwhile, Cooper’s hustle to carve his own path and juggle his relationship with Ariana and her son will set up his professional and personal character arc. And if he rubs bigger players the wrong way, well, things will turn really messy, really fast.

In short, the finale of Landman season 1 wasn’t about father and son heading in different directions; it’s actually about what will happen if they collide. And since we already know season 2 is ready to double down on that conflict, we’re all set to experience the high stakes.
